Sunday 20th April
Group B is the hotting up to be the group to watch as all three teams are separated by four points at the half way stage, the Cutter B secured a resounding 4-1 win at the Jenny Lind B meanwhile in group A the Cutter A are still to get off the mark as they were beaten by the Jenny Lind A 3-2 at home.
Cutter A 2 Jenny Lind A 3 - Report by Tom Pope
Tonight, the Jenny Lind A visit the Cutter A for a great night of close games in the next match of the Rix cup. The draw is made and the handicaps worked out. Pete and Paul kick us off with Paul starting 2000 up. Pete makes a 600 break, Paul pegs. Pete gets back on and knocks in a 1920 break only to take a peg. Paul responds with a 1000 break before letting Pete get back on and chalk up 1610 before the bar goes and Pete just edges Paul to the win. Cutter A 1 – JLA 0.  Alec and Ray face off in the second game. Ray starts off 1400 up. Alec has a slow start, allowing ray to build up a 4000 lead. Alec finds his rhythm and starts the chase but runs out of time. Cutter A 1 – JLA 1.  Chris and Andrew are on the slate for the third game of the evening. Andrew starts 1000 up, both register a 450 break. On Chris’ next visit he chalks up a break of 2060, with a brush of the white peg to finish the break. Well held. Chris drew out a 1500 lead that Andrew never caught up with. Cutter A 2 - JLA 1.  Colin and Matt play next. Matt starts 7000 up. Both make 900 breaks, and exchange relatively even blows on the baize. Colin, chasing from the start didn’t catch up with Matt’s 7000 lead. Cutter A 2 - JLA 2.  The final match of the night is Tom and Jimmy. Jimmy starts 900 up. It was a scrappy game throughout that could have gone either way. Jimmy edged out a lead towards the end of the match. Tom made inroads but never levelled the deficit. Cutter A 2 - JLA 3
Jenny Lind B 1 Cutter B 4 - Report by Steve Astley
Jay started for the Cutter with a 600 point start but it didn’t take long for Rob to catch up for the Jenny. Jay wasn’t to be out done though and he forged back into the lead. Rob had little luck on the baize and even though Jay lost a 1k break he was comfortably ahead as the bar fell and took the first game for the Cutter.  The second game followed in much the same fashion as Matt (Cutter) snook into lead and Jenny’s Alex couldn’t make an impression on the scores. With five minutes to go Matt had a good lead and a table loaded with balls prevented Alex getting back to the break.  Cutter’s Dave started with a large 3,300 score but had trouble adding much to it on his first visit to the table. Jez (Jenny) was determined to make his mark and scored an impressive 6.5k break leaving Dave to try and catch up. Dave didn’t have much luck however and Jez banged in another 2K to win the night’s first one for the Jenny.  In the fourth game Sam (Cutter) took advantage of his handicap to remain in front all the way as Steve (Jenny) failed to capitalise on his break shots taking the Cutter 3-1 into the lead. Sam returned with another healthy start for the final game, this time facing Chris.  Both players managed to knock the black peg over in the early stages levelling the scores and increasing Chris’ chances. The rest of the game became rather haphazard though with many pegs falling and in the end Sam managed to take his second victory of the night.  Final score JLB: 1, Cutter B: 4.

Ash win big as Jenny B start with a win
Sunday 20th April
The Ashburnham Arms have romped to a great lead in group A after a 5-0 win at the Jenny Lind A, despite the scoreline a lot of games could've gone either way.  Meanwhile in group B the Jenny Lind B started with a win as they overcame the reigning champions the Old King John with a 3-2 win.
Old King John 2 Jenny Lind B 3 - Report by Andy Ellison.
The handicap system provided the basis of the outcome of the match as OKJ entertained Jenny B in the Rix Cup. Chris opened for the home team against Steve and both players took time to settle. Chris gradually worked his way past Steve's 600 advantage and pushed on into a winning position without either player showing their best form. Andy for OKJ met Jez on even terms in the next and perhaps surprisingly both players lost their opening score when well set. Andy didn't turn down a second chance though and recorded a break of 3720 to set up a win as Jez found himself stranded at the top of the table when he did get table time. In the absence of skipper Nigel, the victim of a painful broken elbow, Garry stepped up for OKJ and received a 700 handicap advantage from Alex. Garry started well and built a lead but Alex in put a 1500 break to level up. The crux of the game came when Garry lost a near 1k towards the end of the frame and Alex stepped in for a winning break.  The real impact of the handicap system was shown after the break with Roger facing a 5200 deficit against Rob for Jenny B. Roger started confidently with a 2k break, but lost it to a slight miscalculation. Rob's efforts kept Roger off the table for a while, when he returned it was too late to challenge the total facing him but a brave effort took him to 4260, showing that scores must be kept to flourish under the handicap rules. With the match score at 2-2 Jez returned, handing Mark for OKJ a 1600 advantage. There was good early scoring from both players but Jez eventually settled into the table and recorded two 3k breaks in quick succession that settled the game and the overall match in favour of Jenny B at 3-2.  I'm sure that everyone in the League will want to join with the OKJ team in sending best wishes to Nigel for a speedy recovery from a painful and incapacitating injury.
Get well soon Nigel! - SH.

Ash and OKJ start Rix Cup with wins
Sunday 13th April
The Ashburnham Arms and the Old King John started their Rix Cup campaigns with wins, the holders the Old King John secured an impressive 3-2 win at the Cutter B, meanwhile the Ashburnham Arms beat the Cutter A 4-1 at home.
Ashburnham Arms 4 Cutter A 1 - Report by Sandy Harmer.
Mick started brightly and quickly caught up his handicap deficit, Chris struggled to get going and Mick looked to take advantage only to miss a ball on a 1500 break. Mick took advantage on his next attempt with a 1300 break to take the lead this proved to be crucial as Chris started to get going just as the bar went as Mick took the frame. The second game started similar to the first, Alex struggled to get going but Dave managed in small breaks to go level, Dave scrapped throughout to build a decent lead that meant he won the game to make it 2-0. The home side made it 3-0 as Sandy Harmer defeated Tom Pope, Tom started brightly and added 800 to his advantage, Sandy came back with a 4k break which saw him just take the lead but a few small breaks when the balls were up the back of the table gave Sandy the advantage as he got the break back and added a further thousand to ensure of the win for the Ash. Home captain Dave Pearce had the huge advantage against Colin Southouse and furthered his lead with his opening break, Colin lost a 2k break but soon found himself with the break but came off with 2k, it wasn't Colin's night as he couldn't get going, Dave gathered himself and ended the frame with a lovely 2k break to seal the win even without the help of the handicap. The away side got themselves on the board as Peter Payne beat Dave White, Dave got himself level midway through the game but a decent break from Pete put him just ahead of Dave which Dave didn't take advantage of and Pete took the frame as the Ash won 4-1 but without the handicap it would've been a clean sweep.
Cutter B 2 Old King John 3 - Report by Andy Ellison
The Rix Cup competition began this week under handicap rules. Holders Old King John were a little apprehensive about their visit to Cutter B, having lost there in the regular League season. Their anxieties were relieved somewhat when Andy settled well in the first game. He started with a 1k break which ate into Jay's handicap advantage. This was furthered when Jay lost his opener to a peg. Andy consolidated with a break of 2860 which effectively ended the contest, although Jay never gave up and reached 2k by the end. However Cutter B came back strongly in the next two games. Nigel for OKJ didn't come to terms with the table and Sam built on his handicap advantage with a break of 2890, putting him well ahead. His winning margin was enough to give him the win regardless of the handicap advantage. Dave for Cutter forged ahead against Roger in the third, with handicap advantage also. It was late in the game before Roger summoned his response and a break of 3650 put him within striking distance of Dave's total, but the bar fell before he could complete the chase. This was the only game of the evening where the handicap advantage proved decisive for the winner.  After the break Chris started well for OKJ whilst Joe struggled to hold on to his scores. Chris didn't manage to make a large break but did more than enough to outscore Joe's handicap advantage before Joe took a black peg at the end. With the match score at 2-2 the final pairing saw Phil with a 300 advantage over Mark for OKJ, the smallest of the match. Appropriately this proved the tightest of games. There was little to choose between them as it progressed but Mark built a lead towards the end. Phil was on a decent break when the bar intervened and the balls disappeared more quickly than he wanted. Mark did well to achieve the win that swung the result in favour of OKJ in a match that showed the benefits of the handicap system on a varied and enjoyable evening.
